Well, "Chanteuse" has sat staring at me since last November and I have finally decided that there is nothing further that this beautiful hat needs. I did create a hatpin to go with it, as it seems apropos and any hat that is worn at this dramatic an angle should have one.

It seems I can not help myself! For me, that is a good thing. It is what makes me my most creative.

This is a work in progress. She has been named "Chanteuse". She is delicious and I have seen her on several different shaped heads and everyone of them can pull it off.

These are freeform sculptures. Not sure if she is done yet, but she does feel 'done' (except for final shaping/cutting/combs, etc.). Maybe it is the color or the curves, but I really can't imagine anything else on her. Your suggestions? veil? feather pin?

I always go back to this shape. You can see it in many of my pieces. Not only does it fit the head but it is attractive on everyone. This is the same for clothing. Cloth that drapes and curves around a body is much more attractive to me than hard lines.

Though I do find some of the austere and moderne lines attractive in furnishings, my emotions always go to the curve. Soft edges, natural movement.

"Vivienne" on a very happy owner!

It has been a whirlwind for the last two weeks. The opening of the Fine Craft Studios at Studios on the Park has been nothing short of exhilarating!

I have currently been devoting my energy to re-creating some knitted hats that have been my bread and butter for many years. I had gotten tired of making them so I stopped. When I picked up the needles again, my fingers remembered what my brain had forgotten. The joy of seeing a knitted piece, no matter how simple, come to fruition, was something I had lost in the last couple of years.

For me, one of the best parts of selling out of a brick and mortar shop is that I get to see my customers face (yes... their real live face!) as they try on their hats, primp in front of a mirror and decide whether the hat is for them. There is nothing quite like a woman with hat attitude. When she knows she looks good. When it makes her happy to have a hat sitting on her head. When she knows eyes are turned to see what she is wearing. and for me..., this is something I rarely get to see because I was primarily selling online. There is also the little added joy of not having to package a beautiful hat up for shipping.

The Trilby Hat & It's Popularity

Ahhhh, the Trilby! We've all seen it. I own a Trilby... a plain black Trilby that belonged to my son. I love the shape and the attitude. It is still being worn today after starting out its illustrious career in the late 1800's.

For me, it always makes me think of the 50's & early '60's (that's the 1950's and the early 1960's).

or Frank Sinatra .

All men wore hats then and the type of hat they wore said alot about the kind of guy they were. Obviously they were very cool.

The Trilby is a felt hat, with a narrow brim with a crown that has a deep indent. It has been a fashion statement for men and women for a very long time. George Du Maurier wrote a novel called "Trilby" in 1894 which became a play a year later. The Hat is named after the main character, and became famous because the actress playing the part of "Trilby" wore one .

The Trilby is similiar to the Fedora (yes...there will be a post about the Fedora!), but the main difference is that the brim of the Trilby is alot shorter.

Now tell me these hats are not cool, debonair and sauve!!!! (Even though there is a Fedora thrown in there.

But... just like anything else, not everyone should be wearing one :)

The Pork Pie Hat

Last year I had started a blog regarding Hats and their history and last night, while we were watching the 1998 film "Frank Lloyd Wright", I was reminded of it by every photograph of Mr. Wright, looking extremely dapper in his Pork Pie Hat.

I think Pork Pie Hats are sexy. Sexy on a man, sexy on a woman. There is just something about the attitude that goes a long with the Pork Pie. (I also dislike saying "Pork Pie". Sounds kind of slippery, greasy, not quite edible, but I will deal with it).

Pork Pies have been around since the mid-19th century. It is a round hat with a turned-up brim and a flat crown. Both men and women have worn versions of the Pork Pie. Women wore tiny Pork Pies, tipped forward over the forehead because of elaborate hairdos. Men sometimes wore them with ribbons flowing down the back. It gets it's name from its resemblance to a 'pork pie'.

Buster Keaton would not have been Buster Keaton without his Pork Pie Hat....(and he made his very own hats too)!

On "Doing What You Are Told"

Recently, Bill gave a two day workshop on "Getting to Know Acrylics" and I took the workshop. The caveat to taking the workshop was that I 'did everything I was told' in the class. For any of you that know me, you will understand how difficult that is for me. Bill, being Bill, knew that this would take a concerted effort on my part, but I agreed nonetheless.

I am not a painter. I can not draw or better put, I can not draw anything easily and in my entire lifetime there are maybe a handful of things I can look at that don't cause me embarrassment. I see wonderful things in my mind...I see them as 3D sculptural things, but somewhere from mind to hand to paper they are totally distorted by a motor skill that I can not master.

The class had other artists (those that could paint) and I was the only one without the experience.... and it didn't matter! I left that first day completely satisfied with what I had accomplished so far and looked forward to coming back for the second day. Bill has real skill at teaching. He also has incredible patience.

In this case... pictures will definitely speak better than words.

Watching my painting develop on the canvas wasn't the only thrill. I also found that I actually began to understand a concept of painting that I really hadn't thought that much about...The concept that I wasn't painting an object, but that I was painting what makes that object.

Sometimes good things really do come out of 'doing what you are told'.

Catching Up!

For the last several years I had been working for 1000Markets.com, a beautiful site that quickly ran into problems. On the 7th of September, we (those that worked at 1000 Markets) were told that the site would be shutting down and to start looking for other work, etc. We also could not talk about what was going on, which created an additional stress level.

It was sad to see such a beautiful site die... and that is what it did... it died, slowly and painfully. While at 1000 Markets I met some of the best people and I met some of the worse. People with agendas and those without a clue. I had to say goodbye to working friends. It was a great learning experience and then it ended....rather abruptly.

Well, there was one other stop along the way… when 1000 Markets closed, it was taken over by Bonanzle, now Bonanza.

On the 17th of September I was hired on by Bonanzle. This was a truly rotten experience for me. In my fear of not being able to bring in the money I needed to, I took a job with an entity that gave me palpitations from day one. It was a mistake and it felt wrong from the beginning. In a complete contrast to what I had experienced with 1000 Markets, this place was terribly the opposite. It left a terrible taste in my mouth and I am no longer associated with them.

During my time with 1000 Markets a lot happened, especially with regards to my DreamWoven business. There was no way to stay on top of both my own business and working for someone else. For me, it didn't mesh and I watched DreamWoven take a dive. It didn't die, but more or less went into hibernation. I still created and sold quite a few beautiful pieces, but it wasn't like it had been.

Out of the bad experience with Bonanza came good. The last few weeks has brought change to my vision, focus and desires. I have walked away from the daily ‘work’ I was doing, with a lot of new experience and usable skills. The creative fire that dwindled to smoldering ashes has returned. Slow and steady.

It hasn’t been a month yet, since 1000 Markets closed, but things move fast on the internet and it feels as if this occurred several years ago. It is time for new. It is time for healthy and it is time for energy!

Some of the great things that are going on now are:

**Bill now has a studio at Studio on the Park and has sold a few small paintings and taught a very successful 2 day workshop and is continuing to paint daily.

**I started a small Art Tile business that seems to be doing alright and fills in the small cash flow problems.

**I became more involved with the local Art Association and have been helping with their exhibit bring-ins and show hangings and met some of the (real live) best people around!

**A wonderful woman is opening a Fine Craft at Studios on the Park here locally and I have the opportunity to help her with some of my gained knowledge and she has inspired me to push myself into creating a new line of hats.

**The new hat line is called “Tissu” (French for fabric, cloth, material) and I am enjoying them immensely. It is not my usual way of creating hats, so this is good for me as well. I also have a huge pancake pile of brilliant colored Attitude hats ready for her shop.

I want to thank all of you who have purchased from me during the last several years. Thanks for your patience and understanding and I hope you stick with me through all the upcoming new adventures I might find myself in. ~Rachel

I have always been enamored of costume and culture and I am hoping that 2010 is my year for doing alot more of these 'mixed' pieces. This is my niche, this is what makes my heart soar. Don't get me wrong... I love creating the 'more wearable' of my pieces, but it is these wild and exciting pieces that bring me to a completely different plane.

"Tin Hinan" - Her name is from the Tuareg and she is a famous ancestress of the Taureg people. The queen mother; a mythical ancestor and founder of the Tuareg language and culture. The Tuareg consider women to be the repository of culture, and a guarantor of the unity and honor of the community.

She talked of her train ride last evening and how patiently she had waited at the station. All I could think of was how the moonlight must have looked on her, glorifying this beautiful creature. I asked if she ever worried about traveling alone and she told me, "No". And in that one word I saw the appreciative glances she had gotten from every man and woman on that train.

But I knew, Simone being Simone, that she had ignored them, and stayed intent on watching her own reflection in the dark glass as she sped to see me.

The Women of Wynter

This is one of my favorite seasons. Winter….. when the air is cold. Where every gust makes my skin feel alive and where blankets on my bed are de rigueur. I awake refreshed and excited, ready to experiment with whatever the day brings. It is my favorite season, truly.

Sadly I live where triple digits scorch three months out of the year… usually more. The triple digits infiltrate everything. They suck the air away from me, they dry me out, fry me and rile me. I feel tired and uncomfortable, useless and slow. But then I wonder….

I wonder if the simmering that occurs may not be my ‘baking time’ for creativity. Months of slow boil, softening and melting. Where the juices of my ideas are blended and heated and the special aromas of my yearnings are thrown into the mix.

Ideas having congealed, lend themselves to my mind and fingers. Where the wind caresses my neck and makes my hair fly out behind me, this is where these delicacies are born. Wishful thinking coming to fruition with that first taste of cold. A summer’s fast becomes a Wynter’s delight and I am hungry now for the next creation.

And…..

This year is no different. The “Wynter Whispers” Collection is being served. Each piece holding its own. A palette of nouveau couture, paired with an eye towards fantasy and only the best aperitifs.

Ruby (as I fondly call her) started here with Diana of DyeDianaDye of Georgia. She has lovingly hand-dyed all the coats for this adventure. RubyFruit looked like this as she went to her first destination

Her first meeting was with Laura Timmins in Wisconsin. Laura's tale of RubyFruit can be seen here: . Laura's additions of the front collar placket are stunning and the added goodies sewn in are like little treasures to find. This is what Ruby looked like when she left Laura.

I knew what I wanted to do with her from the moment I saw my first picture of her.... but now it was down to the wire.. I have to choose. I have to choose...... She was draped with all kinds of hand-dyed yarns and ribbons. I had to find what I wanted to work with... and I did.....

Cuprum Riding Hat - Cloche Series

I love this color... it is one of my favorites. In fact, I have a whole stash of fabrics, pieces of clothing from thrift stores, etc, stored under my bed. They have been there for years.... Someday they will become something else. I always remember them whenever I am working on something else in the color Copper.

This is "Cuprum", (which is Latin for copper). These cloche style hats arecharming, don't make me sweat in this hot weather and are just plan fun to play with.

Cloche Series - "Junie" Hat

Still playing with the Cloche Series of hats. This one is in a beautiful, vintage appeal cotton.

About 8 or 9 years (or more) ago, I worked for an interior design store. When I left, I left with an obscene amount of fabric samples and fabric books etc. I did finally get rid of some of the fabric books, but the larger sample pieces I kept. I have a goodly size batch of some Martha Stewart Home collection cottons. Nice weight, vintage patterns, beautiful weave and soil/oil repellent as well! I keep things forever, or at least it feels that way, but I know that if I keep something long enough because I like/love it or because there is value in it, I eventually will wind up using it. This is the case with these fabrics.

I had forgotten what a pain in the butt lining things was, but I had a bolt of some fine muslin also laying around (I told you, I keep everything!) and it worked perfectly for the lining.

"1000 Markets is an Etsy rival with backing from PayPal founders"

The Founder's Fund, a San Francisco venture firm created by PayPal co-founder Peter Thiel and others, is bankrolling a tiny Seattle Internet startup called 1000 Markets that is trying to transform the way artisan goods are bought and sold online.

There's already some hefty competition in that arena, including Etsy and eBay. But 1000 Markets co-founder and CEO Matthew Trifiro believes there is room to operate against the bigger rivals by creating a more effective way for small merchants to sell jewelry, fabrics, soaps, specialty foods and other goods online.

1000 Markets quietly launched last month and now has about 75 specialized marketplaces where artisans are selling everything from steampunk jewelry to to handmade hats to crafts associated with The Day of The Dead."

Yes... not only am I enjoying how these are coming out... I am thoroughly enjoying making them. I love embellishing and the side embellishment on this piece as well as the last one ("Mandy Cloche")were so much fun putting together...

It has been a bit of a while since I've posted....

I've been extremely busy....absolutely loving my home on 1000 Markets and enjoying the artisans that are there. BTW, I believe the Grand Opening, the Launch, the Big SheBang, is going to happen next month. It is such a gorgeous online selling venue. Pretty to just browse, easy to purchase and extremely easy to sell there.

The whole concept of Markets, still blows me away... Groupings of artisans forming Markets that are thematic....To name a few, "Wearable Art Market", "Ever After Wedding Market", "Child's Play Market", MetalCraft Market, there is even a "Trunkt Market" there! Paper markets, wood markets, regional markets, food markets,.... just like a real-live thriving marketplace. If you haven't experienced it yet... you should come visit. It is unlike any other online selling venue... seriously!

Deep in the woods colour. Ridges and lacework run around the back perimeter and it is embellished with three tassels. The two side tassels are topped with a vintage button from my personal collection and a silver metal hand cut tube bead.

This is a beautiful combination of hand dyed Silk/Viscose blend, a lovely green Linen and a coppery Rayon. It is lightweight and warm. It is one of the few hats that I make that is totally crochet and this particular hat can be worn by those that can not tolerate wool.

About the hat:

A simple beauty, but exquisitely full of details. Ridges and lacework run around the back perimeter and it is embellished with two tassels.

This is a beautiful, soft and luscious combination of the finest Alpaca, Silk and Merino in a lovely Cream color. Warm yet delicately light. It is one of the few hats that I make that is totally crochet and one of the few designs I will do in a solid colour.

The hat measures approx. 11" (27.9 cm) when laid flat (at the widest point and approx. 8" (20.3 cm) from top to the point right above the ridges. For reference, the mannequin head is 21" (53.3 cm). There is stretch due to its construction and it can fit a variety of sizes. My head measures approx. 24" with all of my hair and it fits wonderfully. Please measure your head and send me your measurements if you have a question about whether this hat will fit you.

It is a stunning statement, but remember....it can cause "Specialness" and you will always have to be ready for that!

I have got to say that some of the best advertising is seeing someone wearing one of your creations... at least for me. I started to put together a collection of "Wearers of my Hats & Things" and will hopefully get it done soon... but here are several pics (the two on top were sent to me the other day and I am so happy to have them!). This Attitude Hat is full of vibrant rich colors.. greens, violets, raspberry and russet brown.. a turbulent mix! This is insanely beautiful stuff, exquisitely hand dyed. It is handknit by me and is hand dyed wool. The hat can be worn any way you want... any colour showing up front, piled up on your head, dragged to the side or with all your hair tucked up inside. It's up to you!

It's your Attitude to fit your mood! Also.. .there is a lot of room for you to squoosh those dreads, or extra long hair, up into the hat, if you want to :)

It measures approx. 10.5" (26.7 cm) when laid flat and approx. 13" (33 cm) when stretched out. Because of its construction, it can be worn by a variety of head sizes. But please, measure your head by using a measuring tape around your crown, going around the largest part of your head. For reference only, the mannequin head circumference is 21" (53.3 cm). All hats made from this colourway will have the exact same colours, but placement will vary.

This is a frantic time of year for me. That being said, it is also the time of year that I crave making my more Wearable Art pieces. Of course this urge occurs between the frantic-ness of the season, the craziness of everything else going on. Go figure..... There comes a space... it happens when I have done all I can with existing things, procrastinated enough (cleaned off my work table, done the dishes and ambled around complaining about not having enough coffee).... then comes the 'breather space'. It all gels. It all comes together. My fingers do what they are told, my juices are flowing, nothing intrudes, the music sounds good, the colors reflect correctly, there is some peace in my mind (the gremlins have quieted down a bit) and voila'... a creation takes shape, calls to me, comes to fruition.

A Man of Many Talents

My husband .....I want to blog about him...........

recently he has been on a journey with his own art. Though he has been a painter (and photographer) for many many years, he is just now learning to 'just paint'. He and I work very differently. It is one of the things that attracts us so greatly to each other.

We admire each others work, but i believe we also admire how each of us works. I use 'seat of the pants' technology and he actually, really knows what he is doing. I jump with both feet and grab everything that is near me on the way in. He plans, decides, utilizes and then commences action. I turn the container over and sprinkle the spice, he will use a measuring spoon. Understand?

We have both learned so much from each other. I've learned to temper my running amuck, somewhat. He has learned to take leaps of faith. This is what comes from his 'just painting' for painting sake.

I came home yesterday to some pretty wonderful things................

Firstly.......... was this: http://fiberfocus.blogspot.com/ and please, while you are there, take a look thru her blog.... she is an incredible writer, always has something interesting to discuss and tell about and has a great group of people here at Fiber Focus ( http://fiberfocus.ning.com/ ).... the other good thing is that her name is Rachel. A very good name indeed :)

Secondly, i received a handful of postcard flyers that are making their way to interested parties as we speak. SOLEYNE ( http://soleyne.com/ ) is a new website, that just finished up its beta testing and seems to be very promising. The mechanisms they had in place during the beta testing were good, the money they've spent to move this project forward seems appreciable, and they are already advertising. This postcard flyer is currently being disbursed at at juried art festival in Tarrytown, New York at Lyndhurst Castle. ok.... here is the progress on the new Art For Your Head piece, that i featured in the September 7, 2008 entry below.

The first pic shows the back and what i am needle felting into the shapes i want.... i am adding silk in a handdyed green and coral colourway. I want this to be a very 3 dimensional piece. The second pic is showing some of the beadword, (currently strung and pinned on)... i do this so that i can see where i want it to lay and how i want it to travel.... same with the front of the hat.

I started this hat shape last year..... and have watched it at a distance since then. I wasnt happy with what it was, but yesterday she called to me........... and she will be fine :) after re-working, i am now content with the shape and have started working on the details.... the ripples, the dents, the layers........... i am pleased with the thought of this on a head........... for me.......... this is where it starts...........

Girls in a queue. These girlies are waiting their turn..... sometimes i just see these heads all over my studio and i am amazed that they aren't real people..... these are items i am currently working on... should make a debut shortly.... but who knows... i kind of like just dressin' the ladies up and checking out their attitudes.

See that little rectangle shape above the center head.. a little to the right (you can see the roundish crown of a hat)?....well sometimes i will draw (and color) a hat out... i love those little canvasses. (and of course my mind goes straight to "hmmmmm wonder if i could sell them?????) that wierd thing between creation and business..... i don't know...........i love what i create, but i mean, how much 'stuff' can one girl have???? if i don't sell my goodies, they will sit in a bin because i couldnt possible wear them all, nor would i want to ... some are just not my style.........but i loved creating them.... kwim?
